Steeped in local folklore and legends, this magical region is famed for fairytales and witches, and has become one of the top trails of Germany and a mecca for walkers.

Discovering the Harz Mountains and National Park, you will pass through evergreen and coniferous forests, rock canyons, towering cliffs and medieval half-timbered villages. You will also have the chance to climb Brocken, the highest peak in the Harz mountain range.

With friendly locals who are always happy to help and know how to have fun, you can’t help but be drawn in to this fascinating region.

Typical Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Travel to Osterode

    Fly to Hanover and make your way by train to Osterode. Your trip starts at your hotel in Osterode where a welcome pack and your route notes will be waiting for you.

  2. Day 2: Osterode to Clausthal-Zellerfeld

    Today's walk will take you uphill along old trade routes, getting your first glimpse of the Oberharzer Wasserregal. Today is a fairly relaxing day,  making your way to the university town of Clausthal-Zellerfeld this afternoon.

    Walking distance: 16 km | Ascent: 500 m | Descent: 170 m

  3. Day 3: Clausthal-Zellerfeld to Altenau

    Today's path stays fairly level with little ascending or descending. You will walk along forest paths and narrows trails while following the fascinating dyke ditch of this region.

    Walking distance: 17 km | Ascent: 220 m | Descent: 300 m

  4. Day 4: Brocken Mountain

    One of the highlights of the trip, today you will climb Brocken Mountain. Located in the heart of the Harz National Park, you will be following varied, high quality paths which are often rocky underfoot.

    Walking distance: 20 km | Ascent: 625 m | Descent: 50 m

  5. Day 5: Schierke to Rubeland

    Descending from Brocken Mountain, you will continue through the Harz National Park. Passing the Trudenstein mountain and a waterfall in Konigshutte Village, continue your walk along the Bode River to Rubeland.

    Walking distance: 21 km | Ascent: 400 m | Descent: 500 m

  6. Day 6: Rubeland to Treseburg

    Today's walk will have lots of undulation, as you continue along the Bode River and through the Bode Valley until you reach Treseburg.

    Walking distance: 20 km | Ascent: 400 m | Descent: 200 m

  7. Day 7: Treseburg to Thale

    Your final walk of the week is fairly relaxing. You will hike through the Bedetal which is steeped in legends until you reach Thale and its famous town hall.

    Walking distance: 10 km | Ascent: 250 m | Descent: 340 m

  8. Day 8: Depart Thale

    Your tour will finish after breakfast at your accommodation. Make your way by train to Hanover or Leipzig airport for your return flight.
